Overseas Study at IU Bloomington Again Ranks Among the Nation's Top 10

November 16, 2016

Indiana University Bloomington ranks 10th nationwide among more than 1,000 U.S. universities in overall number of students studying abroad, according to the latest Open Doors report released by the Institute of International Education. IUB has ranked in the top 20 for more than two decades for the total number of students going abroad.

According to Kathleen Sideli, Associate Vice President for Overseas Study at Indiana University, the Open Doors figures only partially account for the full profile of IUB student mobility since they only include U.S. students earning credit abroad. In 2014-15 an additional 143 IUB international students pursued study in a country other than their country of origin. And an additional 472 U.S. and international students took part in non-credit educational programs which included volunteer service, internships and research.

IU is strongly ranked nationally across all three duration periods -- #5 for semester students, #13 for academic year students and #16 for summer/short-term programs -- which indicates a balanced distribution of students across programs of different lengths while the national trend has students participating in shorter programs.

The Institute of International Education, the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States, has conducted an annual statistical survey of campuses regarding international students in the United States since 1919, and with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since the early 1970s.
