or Academic Year Programs

Return to this site in January 2010 to access Fall 2010 and 2010-11 Academic Year Program online application.

To apply for an Intersession, Semester or Academic Year program, submit the following:

  1. Online Application
  2. Two copies of personal essay
  3. Letters of recommendation*
  4. One signed copy of the Agreement and Release Form
  5. Two copies of your transcript
  6. Two copies of your résumé for Business School programs only
  7. Additional Items (required for select programs)
Overseas Study and other special merit scholarships available for qualified students. You must apply by your program's deadline for Overseas Study Scholarships.
  1. Online application: Available January 2010 for Fall 2010

You must submit academic data based on OneStart. Failure to do so will invalidate your application. (The only exceptions are for very recent changes in your official major, minor, grades or credit hours that have not yet been updated in OneStart.)

Prior applications will automatically be overridden by any applications subsequently submitted. Students applying to the Aix-en-Provence semester program have the option of indicating a second choice program to Overseas Study. Read our policy on second choice applications for more information.

Applications submitted for other periods will be discarded. For helpful hints regarding the application process, see our Top 10 Tips for Applying to Overseas Study.

  2. Two copies of personal essay:
Compose a well-written paragraph or essay in response to each question. Edit your responses with care so that you present yourself effectively to the selection committee. Include your name and the name of your program on the top.
    • Why are you applying to this program? In what specific ways will this program contribute to your overall academic and professional objectives?
    • Will this program lengthen your degree program at IU? If so, explain why you feel it is academically relevant to do so.
    • Give evidence of your serious interest in the host country.
    • Life in another country involves significantly different living situations, academic environments and social customs. What experience and skills do you have that will help you cope with such differences?
    • What are your primary non-academic activities and interests?
    • What do you expect to be the most challenging aspects of studying abroad?
    • Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? Is there anything about your academic record or information in your application that you would like to explain further?

  3. Two letters of recommendation*:
Arrange to have letters of recommendation sent to Overseas Study from two professors (preferred) or associate instructors who know your work well, not from advisors, employers, or friends. If a foreign language is required for your program, one letter should be from a current or recent professor or associate instructor in that language.

*Reutlingen Dual Degree programs require a third reference from a professional source.

Remind your references of the application deadline and the program you are applying for. To verify whether your references have sent letters of recommendation to Overseas Study, contact your references, not Overseas Study.

  4. One copy of the Agreement and Release form:
This document should signed by you, and if required, your parent or guardian. Print out form from the web.

If you don't already have it, to open this and other PDF files. If you are unable to access this file, contact Overseas Study overseas@indiana.edu or (812) 855-9304.

  5. Transcripts*:

*Budapest-Business, Cairo, Legon, Lima and Maastricht programs require one official transcript and one photocopy from every institution you have attended since high school, including IU, in addition to one unofficial IU transcript (instructions above). To obtain an official IU Bloomington transcript, complete a Request for Transcript form at the Registrar's Office, Franklin Hall 100, or go to “Transcripts” on the Registrar’s home page at: http://registrar.indiana.edu/. If you have transferred to IU from another school, you must contact the Registrar at that school to obtain an official transcript. Have your official transcripts sent to Overseas Study.

  6. Current Résumé (for business programs):
Two copies of your current résumé
for Business School programs (Budapest-Business, Cairo, Hong Kong, Maastricht, Monterrey, Reutlingen, Rouen, Sydney).

  7. Additional Items (for select programs):

Applications must be submitted to Overseas Study by your program's deadline.

Overseas Study CANNOT make photocopies for you. You MUST make all copies before arriving in our office.

Dossiers are reviewed by screening committees and electronic notifications are sent to each applicant. Allow approximately 4 weeks from application deadline for processing.

Only when all of the above materials have arrived in the Overseas Study Office will your application be complete. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly by the recommenders.

Initial prepayment of $500 is due as follows:
