Applying for Overseas Study: Top Ten Tips

  1. Always turn in application materials etc. on time (no exceptions). A decision cannot be made on your application until it is complete. Also, we cannot guarantee that late items will be processed by our office or, more importantly, by the host institution, if they are late.

  2. Write your name and program on EVERYTHING that is submitted to the office.

  3. Always attach photos and other small items, like checks and money orders, with a paperclip or include these items in a separate envelope, particularly when sending these items to us via US or campus mail. Unattached items may accidentally get thrown away by the person who opens our mail if s/he can't see them in the envelope. NOTE: New photos stick together! Let photos dry before placing them on top of one another.

  4. Keep in mind that we need original signatures (parent and student) on the Agreement and Release form.

  5. Do not call to inquire whether your recommendations have been received; check with your recommenders. If we haven't received the recommendation(s), we will notify you via email AFTER the application deadline has passed.

  6. Do not call to inquire about the status of your application; we will send your notification letter to you via e-mail. Allow approximately four weeks from the application deadline for processing.

  7. Keep in mind that some programs require interviews. For other programs, if your qualifications are marginal, the faculty committee may also request an interview with you.

  8. Also keep in mind that many programs require a second application, with formal acceptance approved by the host institution or provider, not Overseas Study.

  9. Keep Overseas Study updated when your campus, permanent, and/or summer address changes. Changing your address with the Registrar's Office or on OneStart does not automatically change our records. If you don’t, you may not receive your handbook packet, second application, or visa application on time.

  10. Check your (IU) e-mail account regularly throughout the year, including the summer, for announcements, reminders, etc. If you don’t, you may miss important announcements.
