Satisfying the culture studies requirement overseas

Read about the Culture Studies Requirement on pp.11-12 in the College of Arts & Sciences 2008-2010Bulletin. See pp. 379-384 for List A courses; p. 386 for List B courses.

I. IU ADMINISTERED OR CO-SPONSORED PROGRAMS

Academic Year

The Culture Studies (CS) requirement is automatically satisfied since most of the coursework on these programs is cultural in orientation. Upon completion of an AY program, students will earn both a CS-A and a CS-B requirement.

Semester

Students will earn the equivalent of one Culture Studies A course toward the completion of the Culture Studies Requirement. In addition, students may receive credit for the other CS course on the basis of actual course work completed on the program. The course must equate to regular culture studies courses at IU (see notebooks on programs and cross-check with COLL bulletin) or must be approved through a petition process through the College of Arts and Sciences for CS credit. Petition forms are available at Kirkwood 012 or at www.indiana.edu/~college/recorder/forms/CS.pdf. You should be sure to bring back all relevant course materials: course descriptions, syllabi, reading lists, assignments and papers.

II. NON-IU PROGRAMS

If you need CS credit for coursework on a non-IU program, you should identify possible courses on the program that are similar to CS courses at IU and then submit a petition form, available at the College of Arts and Sciences, Kirkwood Hall 012 or at www.indiana.edu/~college/recorder/forms/CS.pdf. In general, courses will be considered for CS credit if they treat in depth some aspect of the culture of the country or area in which you will be studying, but courses must be individually approved by the College. Courses can only be evaluated for CS credit after they been completed. You should be sure to bring back all relevant course materials: course descriptions, syllabi, reading lists, assignments and papers.
