Myths of Study Abroad
MYTH: Study abroad is just for language majors.
Wrong!
- You can study abroad whatever your major.
- Half of IU’s overseas study programs have no foreign language requirement at all.
- Some programs require a strong foreign language background so that you can take regular courses at the host university.
MYTH: Study abroad is only for juniors.
Wrong!
- You may participate in some summer programs as early as your freshman year.
- Seniors regularly study abroad. (Participation on an IU program counts toward the senior residency requirement.)
Myth: I won’t graduate on time if I study abroad.
Wrong!
- The majority of students who study abroad graduate within four years or 128 hours.
- Study abroad fulfills distribution, international dimension and culture studies requirements.
- Summer programs can speed up your study of a foreign language.
MYTH: Business Majors cannot study abroad.
Wrong!
- The School of Business encourages its students to study abroad.
- Many IU programs award Business credit.
- Study abroad is a great way to satisfy the international dimension requirement and the international studies concentration.
- Study abroad is a great résumé builder.
MYTH: Study abroad is expensive.
Wrong!
- IU programs are modestly priced.
- You may apply loans and scholarships to program costs.
- Overseas Study awards scholarships for academic-year and language-based programs.
- Need-based scholarships are available for minority students on all programs.
- Fees for exchange programs in Australia, The Netherlands and Japan are almost the same as those in Bloomington.
