Russell O. Salmon Scholarship

The Russell O. Salmon Study Scholarship was established in 2009 and is awarded by the IU Office of Overseas Study to an eligible student at Indiana University wishing to study in Guanajuato, Mexico for the summer term.

Russell O. Salmon, Ph.D. (Columbia University) taught at Indiana University from 1967 until his death in 2009.   During those years he served IU in various capacities, including Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, Director of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, mentor to students in the Individualized Major Program, and a faculty member in the Hutton Honors College.  His teaching was multi-faceted since he was dedicated to passing along to students his passion for cultural studies of Latin America—including history, political science, sociology, literature, art and music.  He was committed to his students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level.

He was recognized for his teaching and service with major awards, including the IU Distinguished Service Award, Teacher of the Year, Post Secondary Level, Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, IU’s Teaching Excellence Recognition Award, and the John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies.

Among the highlights of his long and active career, Professor Salmon was an enthusiast for study abroad activities, leading more programs abroad than any other professor in the history of Indiana University.  He also developed one of IU’s first serving learning programs abroad, building on his commitment as a social activist.
