PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

Institute for the International Education of Students—(IES) program.
Program housed at Beijing Foreign Studies University

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

IES "Contemporary Issues" Program* takes in-depth look at Chinese history, ethnicities, contemporary literature and film, and international relations through a series of advanced seminars
Initial period of Intensive Chinese language training, followed by daily language studies through the end of the semester
IES Area Studies Course taught in English by scholars in anthropology/sociology, environmental studies, or political economy
Block schedule will include orientation period, intensive language study, a 2-credit intensive “Introduction to China” seminar, and three 3-credit area studies courses
Special optional track (in spring semester only) for CIC Honors Program students
This program does not include a language intensive component; IU students will be awarded undistributed credit for the language course(s) and would need to take an IU placement exam upon completion of the program in order to determine the next appropriate language course at IU.

COURSE LOAD

15 IU Credits in IES courses
- 4-credit Mandarin Chinese language course
- 11 credits in IES area studies courses and
  - 2-credit Introduction to Chinese History and Civilization (HIST-G 200 or EALC-OS 100)**
  - Three (3) 3-credit English-taught Chinese studies courses
**Note: -OS 100 (-OS 300) is the default designation to identify courses recorded as 100-level (300-level) undistributed credit that can count in total hours toward graduation and may be able to satisfy major, minor, or distribution requirements with the approval of participant's school.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM INFORMATION

ELIGIBILITY

You may apply if you

are a student at any Indiana University who is making normal academic progress,
are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college, and
have approximately a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Additional eligibility requirement of 3.3 cumulative GPA and admission to IU honors program for participation in CIC Honors Program (spring only).

No Chinese language required.

Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are not eligible.

Fee paid to IU: $640
Fee paid to IES: $12,055^* (tuition, health insurance, room and some meals)
Other meals: $750
Initial prepayment of $500 due Nov. 2 for spring 2010; March for fall
