The Jewish Experience of Modern Germany (IU-Administered Program)
THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE OF MODERN GERMANY
Late Spring Semester classes AND Two-Week Study Program in Germany

GERMANY
- Two week visit to Germany, including Berlin, the thriving capital of Germany and home to Germany's largest Jewish community
- Explore contemporary Jewish culture in Germany and learn about German Jewish history
- Introductory class on German Jewish history held at Bloomington campus in April
- Learn about the new Germany, 16 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall
- Meet with Jewish students and Jewish Studies scholars from Germany to study and socialize
DATES
PROGRAM ORGANIZATION
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
- 2 credits in JSTU H495, Individual Readings in Jewish Studies
- Class on German-Jewish history taught by Matthias Lehmann, Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies & History
- Study Tour
- seminars held in cooperation with Jewish Studies programs at German universities
- guided tours of the Jewish museum in Berlin and memorial sites of the Holocaust
- discussions with representatives of the Jewish community and of other public institutions in Germany
ELIGIBILITY
You may apply if you
- are an IU degree candidate who is making normal academic progress,
- are in at least your second full-time semester of college (priority given to upperclassmen),
- are a Jewish Studies major or certificate student, or have taken courses in the area,
- are willing to live and travel with a group, and
- have approximately a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the
Academic Policies and Procedures
of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity,
seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students
on disciplinary probation during program are not eligible.

- International airfare $900
Program costs are significantly underwritten by Bridge of Understanding, including room, most meals, local transportation, and reimbursement of two-thirds of roundtrip airfare to Germany.
