AFRO-GUYANA

One Month Program with Classes in Bloomington AND Two-Week Study Program in Guyana, South America

An Edward L. Hutton Expanding Horizons Program

Guyana is an English-speaking nation located on the tropical Caribbean coast of South America.
Georgetown, the capital city, is
- one of the most culturally diverse cities in the Western hemisphere, with significant contributions from its African, Amerindian, and East Indian peoples;
- rich with architecture and art, and blessed with remarkable food, dance and music;
- the gateway to the untrammeled, environmentally pristine interior of the country; and
- filled with history, from St. Georges Cathedral, to the famous Botanical Gardens and Georgetown Museum, and to the African Liberation Monument.
Georgetown is a city with a strong sense of the near past, rooted in the struggle of the Guyanese to claim independence and to put an end to their status as a British colony in the 1960s and 1970s.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

15 IU students, 1 IU faculty
One-month program with
- Class meetings at IUB
- 2-week study tour in Guyana
- Final debriefing meeting at IUB in mid-August
IU resident director, Matthew Guterl, Assistant Professor, African American & African Diaspora Studies

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

6 credits in AFRO-A 305 or HIST-T 495 (Undergrads) or AFRO-A 505 or HIST-H 575 (Graduate students)
General history of Guyana and tours of Georgetown and the interior.
Special attention paid to African and East Indian cultures, especially dance, music, and food, as well as to the dynamics of multicultural nationhood and Third World politics.
Several lectures by faculty at the University of Guyana.
Guided tours up two of the country's major rivers.
Visits to a number of prominent historical sites, including colonial forts, museums, and sugar factories.
Local liaison for the program is Mr. Francis Quamina Farrier, the former Director of Drama at the Department of Culture (now retired), and a prize-winning writer and actor.

ELIGIBILITY

You may apply if you

are an IU degree candidate who is making normal academic progress,
are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college,
are willing to live and travel with a group, and
have approximately a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program are not eligible.

Program costs for Indiana University students have been reduced through a grant from the Edward L. Hutton Foundation.
