ACADEMIC PROGRAM
- IES "Area Studies" Program*
- Spanish language immersion program
- IES CORE Course in cultural
diversity, environmental studies, or political
economy
- Required Spanish language course at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador
(PUCE)
- Additional area studies courses taught in Spanish at Facultad Latinamericana de Ciencias Sociales
(FLASCO),
PUCE or IES
- Students may also participate in credit-bearing internship or service
learning experiences with accompanying seminars

COURSE LOAD
- Program requires enrollment in Spanish language course and a combination
of IES center course(s) AND university course(s) or an internship or service
learning experience.
- 15-19 IU credits in combination of IES and university courses
- Required Spanish language course (3-4 credits)
- IES Core course (3 credits)
- 3-4 Area Studies courses
HOUSING
- Students live in private homes in Quito with families or seńoras
- Homestay hosts provide 3 meals per day, 7 days per week

ELIGIBILITY
You may apply if you
- are a degree candidate at any Indiana University campus who is making
normal academic progress,
- are in at least your third full-time semester of college
- will have completed at least five semesters of college level Spanish or the equivalent and
- have an overall cumulative GPA of approximately
3.0
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria
are outlined within the Academic
Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based
on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between
program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period
are not eligible.
ESTIMATED SPRING 2010 COSTS
- Fee paid to IU: $640
- Fee paid to IES*: $12,665 (tuition, orientation, housing and meals, field trips,
health insurance)
Initial prepayment of $500 due Nov. 2 for spring 2010; March for fall - See IU Fee Sheet for additional cost and payment details.
Airfare, personal expenses and vacation travel additional
*Special Discounted IES fee for IU students
FINANCIAL AID
- IU scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs with some
exceptions.
Please carefully check
these exceptions before you commit to a program.
