Office of Overseas Study Statement
March 21, 2006
Strikes in France
The Office of Overseas Study has been in close touch with the sites in France
where IU students are currently studying abroad on IU administered or
co-sponsored programs. The program administrators have assured us that the
students have not been endangered by the recent strike activity that has been
prominent on college campuses and in the larger cities. Students have been
cautioned to keep a low profile and not to attend any demonstrations. The
programs are each ensuring that students will be able to complete the semester
abroad in a number of ways, despite the cancelled classes at some of their
institutions (depending on the site these might entail special tutorials,
independent study, privately hired faculty, etc.).
The Office of Overseas Study does not plan to cancel its programs in
Aix-en-Provence and Rouen or to ask students to return from CIEE or IES programs in
France. We will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis and will
update this statement accordingly.
