IU student wins top award in scholarship competition; two others also receive scholarships

Nikolas Priest, an Indiana University junior from the Bloomington campus, received a top award of $5,000 from the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program to pursue studies overseas. Priest, a double major in theatre and psychology, is currently studying in London. Two other IU-Bloomington students also won Gilman scholarships. Junior Matthew Booker, who has majors in African American and African diaspora studies, sociology, and telecommunications, received $3,000 to support his studies in Legon, Ghana. Junior Darrell Grissen received a $1,700 scholarship and is pursuing his accounting and finance studies in Maastricht, The Netherlands. All three students are abroad during spring semester 2003. These awards bring the list to 10 IU students who have received the Gilman scholarship for a total of $42,700 awarded. For the spring semester, the Gilman scholarship program received 667 applications and awarded 172 scholarships.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. Online applications are available for the fall 2003/academic year 2003-2004 cycle of the Gilman scholarship, and the deadline is April 15, 2003.
