Hutton Foundation renews three-year grant to Overseas Study

In 2004, the Edward L. Hutton Foundation gave the Indiana University Office of Overseas Study a grant for $225,000 to help fund new short-term study abroad programs.  Up through 2007, that grant will have supported 16 program opportunities for over 200 students, resulting in average savings of over $1,000 per student.  These programs, called the Edward L. Hutton Expanding Horizons Programs, are led by IU faculty members who accompany the groups and supervise the academic programs.

The Edward L. Hutton Foundation has renewed its grant for $225,000 for the next three years to continue to help fund new short-term study abroad programs, thus reducing program fees for students.

Upon renewing the grant, Mr. Hutton stated, “I am delighted that the Hutton Foundation can continue to assist Overseas Study at Indiana University in creating and supporting such dynamic programs in countries as diverse as Guyana and India and in fields as far-ranging as sculpture in Berlin and social policy in Amsterdam.  The more students who participate in such programs, the more secure our future will be since these young people will be the decision-makers of tomorrow.  The more they understand other cultures, the better for all of us. ”

Hutton, currently chairman of Chemed Corp. in Cincinnati and chairman of Omnicare Inc., grew up in Bedford, IN and earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at IU. After completing his master’s, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. When the war ended, he worked in Berlin and negotiated several trade agreements, helping to rebuild the German economy. This early experience in Europe inspired him to fund opportunities for IU students to study abroad.

In addition to these program-focused grants given to Overseas Study, Hutton also created the Edward L. Hutton International Experiences Program in 2000. Administered by the IU Hutton Honors College, the program has helped finance study abroad experiences for over 1,200 IUB students. His support for such opportunities stems from his strong belief that students should be exposed to other cultures, broadening their global perspective.

Indiana University is a leader among universities in students who study abroad with over 150  programs in 33 countries. Over 2,000 students study abroad each year, taking advantage of short-term, summer, semester and academic year programs all over the globe.
