The Office of Overseas Study is responsible for facilitating study abroad opportunities for students on all eight Indiana University campuses. Nearly two thirds of the students participate in programs organized by IU units, including those administered by the IU Office of Overseas Sudy. Students also access programs co-sponsored or provided by outside institutions. Indiana University has a long history of offering programs overseas and is a nationally recognized leader in the field, ranked nineteenth among research institutions in having the most students earning academic credit abroad.
The office provides guidance to help students integrate study abroad into their academic plans and graduate on time. Staff members play key roles in national organizations such as NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the Forum on Education Abroad, the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES), and the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE).
Statistics from academic year 2007-08 show that there were:
- 2,678 students from 8 campuses enrolled in year-long, semester-long, and summer programs, 626 from campuses other than IUB
- More than 250 IU-administered and co-sponsored programs to choose from
- 52 target countries, 17 languages
These statistics place IUB as #11th among doctorate institutions according to the 2009 Open Doors report from the Institute for International Education. IUB also placed #11th in the number of students participating in semester-length programs.
Under a mandate from the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs, study abroad initiatives at all IU campuses are subject to prior review and approval by the Indiana University Overseas Study Advisory Council. IU’s programs are periodically monitored to ensure high academic standards. For a current listing of programs, see the programs offered through the Office of Overseas Study and other IU campuses and departments.
The Office of Overseas Study also gives more than $100,000 in need- and merit-based scholarships annually to students wishing to study abroad. These include program-specific scholarships, minority scholarships, and scholarships for students from IUPUI and other IU campuses. All in all, IU students accessed mroe than $8,000,000 in loans, grants and scholarships to study abroad.
