Indiana University ranks 9th in study abroad

Nov. 16, 2004

Indiana University continued to uphold its reputation as a leader for study abroad with a 9th place national ranking among research institutions for 2002-03.

According to the annual report "Open Doors 2004" by the Institute of International Education (IIE), 1,379 IUB students received credit for studying abroad in 2002-03. Students participated in academic year, semester, or short-term programs. The results of the report showed an 11 percent increase in IUB students studying abroad from the previous year’s total of 1,245 students. This figure is higher than the national percentage; overall, the number of U.S. higher education students participating in study abroad programs increased by 8.5 percent.

Since "Open Doors" ranks enrollment by individual campuses, the total cited doesn’t include the entire IU system which reported an additional 333 students to IIE, representing IUPUI, IUSB, IUE, IUK, IUS and IPFW.

Kathleen Sideli, Associate Dean of International Programs and Director of Overseas Study at Indiana University, stated that "our high ranking demonstrates that IU students receive strong encouragement and support to study abroad as an integral part of their degree programs. Indiana University’s commitment to international education is evidenced by its wide range of programs, the range of financial aid dedicated to study abroad (especially Edward L. Hutton International Experience Grants) and the close involvement of IU faculty and staff across its programs."

The top 10 research institutions, by total number of study abroad students, are as follows: 1) New York University - 2,061; 2) University of California-Los Angeles - 1,917; 3) Michigan State University - 1,864; 4) University of Texas at Austin - 1,654; 5) University of Arizona - 1,466; 6) University of Wisconsin-Madison - 1,441; 7) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - 1,426; 8) University of Georgia - 1,401; 9) Indiana University at Bloomington - 1,379; and 10) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - 1,377.
