It is important for Education majors to demonstrate cross-cultural and global awareness. With thoughtful advance planning, students can study abroad and still graduate on time. Students can earn credit toward a concentration or can fulfill general education and elective requirements. Students should always consult an advisor in the School of Education (SOE) before considering a study abroad experience.
Classes from programs with established IU equivalencies are the easiest to incorporate into an Education degree. IU
administered or co-sponsored programs have the greatest likelihood of these
equivalencies. Undistributed course work must be reviewed by the SOE’s Academic Standards Committee; in addition to a syllabus and course description, the faculty committee may require samples of course work and an evaluation by the academic department in which you seek credit. For this reason, Education majors are encouraged to pursue IU administered or co-sponsored study abroad program options.
It is important for Education majors to plan early for an experience abroad so that factors such as courses and the timing of their studies abroad may be considered. Some programs are available to students as early as the summer between freshman and sophomore year. Other programs require students to be in at least their fourth semester of college. Not every Education degree program tolerates an interruption in the sequence of professional education courses. Education majors should consider studying abroad before
they are admitted to the SOE, before beginning the
clusters and/or student teaching, during summers or after their student teaching.
Education majors can also consider a studyent teaching experience abroad through the SOE's Cultural Immersion Projects.

II. Other IU Programs
Education majors are encouraged to consider the Cultural Immersions Projects sponsored by the School of Education. This program offers students teaaching placements in a number of countries around the world, including Australia, China, Costa Rica, Engalnd, India, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Turkey or Wales. See http://education.indiana.edu/~cultural. More information can be found in the W.W. Wright Education Building, Suit 1044.
Additional programs are coordinated by IU departments, schools or campuses.
In all cases information about the programs (e.g. program details, credit awarded,
financial aid, eligibility, deadlines, costs, application instructions, etc.)
must be sought from the sponsoring unit.See
the Big List for more information.III. Affiliated Study Abroad Programs
IU does not offer programs in every location and language, so students may choose to search fromamong the list of affiliated programs and AESOP programs that are administered by other institutions.
As a general rule, the mainstreamed programs are most likely to include courses that fulfill major requirements. Offerings in the programs designed exclusively for Americans are limited and students should review the courses that are available and then consult Overseas Study for guidance.
IV. Other Non-IU Options
If students still do not find something that suits their needs, they should consult the non-IU program instructions to get information on locating a program and procedures to follow.
Please also follow these steps:
- Consult with an SOE advisor to determine which courses would be appropriate to take at other institutions.
- Submit a letter to Academic Standards Committee outlining proposed overseas study plans with alternate courses. ASC meets monthly except during summer.
- Determine re-entry plan for IU and SOE, including registration dates and priority courses.
