OVERSEAS CONFERENCE FUND GRANTS

Guidelines

The Office of the Vice President for International Affairs offers grant support for IU faculty to participate in an international conference. These grants typically provide funding for travel. Travel to conferences in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico is not supported under this program. Participation in the conference must be relevant to the faculty member’s teaching or research goals; funding will be awarded in rank order of priority, for the following types of conference participation:

  1. A conference paper that has been competitively selected through a blind, peer-review process;
  2. Presentation of a keynote address for a conference or a significant section of a conference;
  3. Invitation to serve as Chair of a panel for a conference;
  4. Invited paper (without evidence of competitive peer review); poster sessions.

Eligibility: Tenured and tenure-track faculty at any IU campus. NOTE: For IPFW faculty, only those faculty in IU academic mission departments who are or will be tenured by Indiana University are eligible.

Deadlines: October 1, January 15, April 1, and July 1

Applicants may choose the most convenient deadline prior to the conference. Applicants should apply by their chosen deadline even though they may still be awaiting an official acceptance of their papers. Candidates can apply only one time for any given conference. Late applications cannot be accepted.

Funding: The maximum award is $1,000, and the amount of the award is based on the conference site and the quality of the application. Awards can be used to support airfare, lodging, conference registration, and per diem. An individual can receive no more than a total of $1000 from this grant program in any twenty-four month period.

Recommendation Criteria:

  • Conference contribution: a competitively selected, peer reviewed paper or types of participation, in rank order of funding priority, as outlined above.
  • Value to the candidate and IU of participation in the conference (e.g., how it will enhance the candidate's research, teaching, or service, as well as the record of professional achievement).
  • Degree to which the conference is international in scope and in the representation of its participants.
  • Overall quality and completeness of statement.

Travel Reimbursement Deadline Policy: Beginning September 1, 2010, employee and non-employee travelers will have 60 days from the return date of their trip in which to submit travel reimbursement claims. Reimbursements submitted after this 60 day period will be subject to income tax assessment. Reimbursement claims submitted after 120 days from the return date of the trip will not be reimbursed. Indiana University Foundation funds may not be used for reimbursement after this time period. These deadlines are required by the IRS, and will be strictly observed. Please visit the Travel Web site for more information or e-mail Travel Management Services at travelbl@indiana.edu with questions.
