March 5, 2009 – 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the IUPUI Campus Center
We would like to invite you and your colleagues to an upcoming symposium on promoting international education across the undergraduate curriculum at Indiana University. Education in the 21st century requires international perspectives and awareness for all of our students, regardless of their fields of study. International perspectives must be developed and integrated across the Indiana University undergraduate experience, and not reserved just for students in international and area studies degree programs. Such international curriculum development is a key component of President McRobbie’s International Strategic Plan for Indiana University.
To advance this goal, the Office of the Vice President of International Affairs is organizing an International Learning Workshop to be held on the Indianapolis campus on March 5, 2009. Teams of faculty and staff from all eight Indiana University campuses are invited to attend to learn about recent trends in international learning, explore ways to internationalize individual courses and whole curricula, and to develop campus, school, and departmental action plans.
The Workshop will include presentations by Caryn McTighe Musil, Senior Vice President at the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and Darla K. Deardorff, Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators, as well as sessions by Indiana University staff and faculty who will share promising practices that have been effective in engaging students in international learning. Topics will include internationalization across the disciplines, developing and assessing international learning objectives, integrating study abroad into the curriculum, using IT for global dialogues, and more. Time will be provided for campus teams and individuals to work on campus-specific international learning initiatives. The Workshop will provide a broad overview of the concepts and mechanics of internationalization as well as a deeper exploration of the intricacies and pedagogical issues in internationalizing education at Indiana University.
