The University of Debrecen, located in Debrecen, is the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in Hungary (since 1538). It has over 30,000 students and is one of the most highly ranked Hungarian universities outside of Budapest.
Dates
Debrecen University's academic year runs from early September through June.
Program Orientation
Opportunity for independent research or course work at Debrecen for one academic year. 1 position is open to IU graduate students. Students may also apply for one semester.
Academic Program
- Some of Debrecen’s specialized programs include the arts, economic sciences, informatics, law, music and pedagogy.
- Strong Hungarian language proficiency required.
- Hungarian language courses are included under the exchange (see “Eligibility” section for restrictions).
Housing
Housing is provided in the university's residence hall.
Eligibility
You may apply if you
- Are a graduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
- Have a clear research agenda or course of study that can be accommodated by Debrecen
- Have high Hungarian language proficiency
- 4 semesters of Hungarian is required for Hungarian language courses

Financial Support
- OVPIA provides students with funds to cover the cost of round-trip airfare.
- Debrecen provides board, lodging, or a stipend sufficient to cover the cost of these items, tuition and fees, and medical insurance.
