Recently the US higher education community has established its own high performance network: Abilene
Connects over 150 institutions
Four partners have provided resources for Abilene:
- Fiber from Qwest
- Transmission equipment (Sonet) from Nortel
- Routers from Cisco
- Network operations & management from Indiana University
