THE OWA EMPOWERMENT PROJECT PRESENTS:

SAAVE
Sexual Assault Anti-Violence Educators
of Office for Women’s Affairs (OWA)

Sexual Assault Anti-Violence Educators (SAAVE) is a diverse group of female and male students, who educate their peers, faculty, staff and the broader Bloomington community about the roots of gender and relationship violence, while also fostering healthy relationships and a safe campus community. In partnership with the Office for Women’s Affairs (OWA), the group’s main goal is to use the latest research on sexual assault and anti-violence prevention to empower women and men to understand their individual responsibilities for the prevention of all forms of sexual and gender-based violence through education, intervention and prevention.

SAAVE provides interactive peer-education and training programs for Indiana University residence halls, Greek houses, student and other social organizations. The programs provide accessible definitions and examples of consent, sexual assault, relationship violence, healthy relationships and clear communication as well as strategies for preventing the occurrence and perpetration of sexual and relationship harassment as well as violence. The programs are targeted broadly to reach undergraduate as well as graduate students, faculty, staff and administrators.

SAAVE team members receive a minimum of 30 hours of training before they are allowed to facilitate a workshop. Successful peer educators will be excellent communicators, who are comfortable with interpersonal interactions across race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and nationality backgrounds. SAAVE team members will partner with OWA in promoting and nurturing an atmosphere of educating and empowering students, staff and faculty in ethical, healthy and violence-free behavior. SAAVE peer educators are compensated for their efforts.

If you are interested in becoming a SAAVE peer educator, please complete the SAAVE Peer Educator Application form here and return it to The Office for Women’s Affairs, SAAVE Program Coordinator, Memorial Hall East, Rm. 120, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. 47405. Kindly send inquiries to owa@indiana.edu.

The application deadline for the Fall 2008 semester is October 15, 2008. Information about training sessions will be provided during the interviewing process.
