Initiatives in Chemistry
The Chemistry department at Indiana University, with support from the Office for Women's Affairs (OWA), offers several events and programs for female undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty.
Funding for undergraduate reserarch, travel grants for postdoctoral and graduate students and an annual WI-Chemistry sponsored guest lecturer directly facilitate a positive educational and research experience for female students and postdoctoral researchers.
With programs such as the Mentor-mentee network, a brown bag luncheon network for graduate students and an event to celebrate women chemists at IUB and throughout history, the Women in Chemistry are working to encourage dialog and empower students, postdoctoral researchers, staff and faculty, while at the same time facilitating community building within and among divisions, ranks and gender.
Monthly origanized social events, such as a family friendly picnic in the summer or attending a local festival or theatre production provide networking opportunities with other scientists, encourage a sense of community among the female scientists in the department and to foster a supportive environment.
