Below, the Women in Science Program keeps an updated listing of funding and career development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate women in science as well as women faculty in the sciences. We will begin accepting applications
for the 2007-2008 Academic Year in September, 2007. Application
Eligibility
Applicants must be Indiana University-Bloomington undergraduate
and graduate women in good standing, with majors or specialization
in any area of the natural sciences, social sciences or mathematics.
Funds may be requested for use in a variety of venues, but any
request for use of funds must describe fully its impact on the
applicant's academic/professional career. Travel grant monies
may be requested for costs such as participating in or attending
a conference, symposium or workshop; attending specialized training
off-campus, or supporting off-campus academic research.
Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the Fall and the Spring
Semester.

Scholarships and Internship Opportunities for Undergraduate Women in Science
AWIS College Scholarships
About 2-5 AWIS College Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors each year, including the Helen Davies Award. In addition, Citations of Merit ($300) and Recognition Awards ($100) may be given. In general, female students who are high school seniors and plan to study science in the next academic year may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who plan to attend a college or university in the United States. Deadline: January 18, 2007
Microsoft Science Scholarships
The Microsoft Science Scholarships include General Scholarships, Women's Scholarships, Underrepresented Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities. Scholarships cover up to 100% of tuition costs. Applicants must be enrolled full time in a Bachelor's degree program at a college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. Applicants must demonstrate satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics—and demonstrate an interest in computer science. Scholarship recipients must enroll and complete a salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. Deadline: January 15, 2007
Blacks at Microsoft Scholarships
Each year, BAM awards two $2,500 scholarships to outstanding high school seniors who are interested in pursuing careers in technology. The scholarships are renewable, so winners who continue to meet the criteria can receive an annual $2,500 award for up to four years. Applicants must be high school seniors of African descent who plan to attend a four-year college or university and pursue a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, computer information systems or select business programs. Deadline: March 30, 2007
AWIS 2007 Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award in Physics
The Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award is an AWIS Educational Foundation program for college sophomores and juniors studying physics, including space physics and geophysics, or geoscience. The award in the amount of $1,000 is given annually to an exceptionally well-rounded student who excels in her studies as well as outdoor activities, service, sports, music, or other non-academic pursuits or who has overcome significant obstacles. Female students in the sophomore or junior year of college who are majoring in physics, including space physics and geophysics, or geoscience may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who attend a college or university in the United States.
Renate W. Chasman Scholarship
The Chasman Award consists of a one-time $2,000 award presented in July of each year. Applicants must be women returning to school after a break in their education, and pursuing formal education in the natural sciences, engineering or mathematics Applicants must be at the junior or senior undergraduate level or first-year graduate level at any accredited institution. Applicants must be residents of Long Island in New York State, i.e., Nassau County, Suffolk County, Brooklyn or Queens, U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Deadline April 2, 2007
Barry M. Goldwater Undergraduate Scholarships
The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students -- those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Each scholarship covers tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. The Trustees intend to award up to 300 Goldwater Scholarships. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university. Applicant must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of "B" and be in the upper fourth of his or her class. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Deadline: January 31, 2008
National Institute of Health Summer Internship
Interns must be students, sixteen years of age or older who are currently enrolled at least half-time in high school or an accredited U.S. college or university (undergraduate or graduate level). Students who have been accepted into a college or university program may also apply. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents. Internships last a minimum of 8 weeks, usually beginning in May or June. Deadline: March 1
NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program
Undergraduates may apply for a 10-week summer session or a 15-week Fall session, 40 hours per week. Students receive a $5,000 stipend for the summer session or a $7,500 stipend for the fall session, plus round-trip airfare. Applicants must: 1. hold U.S. citizenship, 2. be in their junior or senior year of studies, 3.be enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university. Academic major in engineering, mathematics, computer science or physical/life sciences. Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 Deadline: January 31 (for Summer) February 28 (for Fall)
Boeing Undergraduate Internships
Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for Boeing internships. Boeing is particularly interested in students majoring in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Business. However, students majoring in other relevant areas may also apply. Deadline: None
NRAO Summer Student Research Assistantship
The program runs from 10-12 weeks over the summer, from early June to mid-August. At the end of the summer, participants present their research results in a student seminar and submit a written report. There are 3 types of Summer Student programs available: 1.The NRAO Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) 2. The NRAO Undergraduate Summer Student Research Assistantship 3. The NRAO Graduate Summer Student Research Assistantship Program
Stipends are $475 per week for undergraduates, and $510 per week for graduated seniors and graduate students. Travel expenses to and from the NRAO site will be reimbursed, up to $500. Up to seven days lodging will be reimbursed, up to a maximum of $200.
Grants & Scholarships For Graduate Women in Science
Those hoping to pursue a doctoral degree and career in the physical sciences, biochemistry, computer science, and related fields of science and engineering are potential NPSC Fellows. The traditional NPSC Program offers funding for 2 to 6 years. Students typically apply during their senior year as an undergraduate. The Dissertation Support Program supports graduate students while they conduct dissertation research. NPSC's online application typically opens August 25 and closes November 5.Application http://www.npsc.org
The six fellowship areas are 1.Congressional, 2.Diplomacy, 3.Energy, Environment, Agriculture & Natural Resources, 4.Global Stewardship, 5.Health, Education & Human Services, 5.National Defense & Global Security. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and hold a doctoral level degree in any physical, biological, medical or social science, engineering or any relevant interdisciplinary field. L'Oreal USA Women in Science Fellowship Program
L'OREAL USA offers a one-year fellowship to women in post doctoral programs who are pursing research in the Life Sciences, Physical and Materials Sciences, Technology (including computer science), Engineering, and Mathematics. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. L'OREAL's call for applications typically opens each year, in June. More information can be found at L'Oreal USA.
UNESCO-L'OREAL Fellowships for Young Women in Life Sciences
The UNESCO-L'OREAL Fellowships for Young Women in Life Sciences honor 15 young women researchers at the doctoral or postdoctoral level, with $40,000 to support two years of research at a foreign institution. Three fellowships will be awarded to applicants from each of the following five regions: Africa, Arab States, Asia & the Pacific, Europe & North America, and Latin America & the Caribbean. Deadline: August 13, 2007
AWIS Predoctoral Awards
About 5-10 AWIS graduate fellowships in the amount of $1,000 are awarded each year. The four memorial awards are: (1) Amy Lutz Rechel Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the field of plant biology, (2) Luise Meyer-Schutzmeister Award, for an outstanding graduate student in physics, (3) Ruth Satter Award, for an outstanding graduate student who interrupted her education for at least three years to raise a family, and (4) the Diane H. Russell Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the field of biochemistry or pharmacology. AWIS may also award Citations of Merit ($300). Female students enrolled in a behavioral, life, physical, or social science or engineering program leading to a Ph.D. degree may apply. Deadline: January 25, 2007

The National Geographic Society awards grants in the following areas: anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, biology, botany, geography, geology, oceanography, paleontology, and zoology. Grant amounts usually range from $15,000-20,000. Women scientists with a Ph.D. degree or pursing a Ph.D.-level degree from any country may apply. Deadline: none, submit pre-application at least 10 months prior to anticipated project start date.
SDE/GWIS Fellowship awards are for research in all natural sciences including: physical, environmental, mathematical, computer, life sciences, anthropology, psychology, statistics, food science, nutrition and toxicology. Applicants must be enrolled at a graduate student or engaged in post-doctoral or early-stage junior faculty academic research and demonstrate financial need for continuation of their research. Women from any country may apply. Applicants must be a member of SDE/GWIS. Fellowship amounts range from $1,000 to $4,000. Deadline: January 15 (every year)
