INFORMED CONSENT STATEMENT
Collaboration
and critical thinking in Web-based learning environments
Soon you will be
invited to participate in a research study via e-mail. The purpose of
this study is to investigate participant collaboration and learning
in a Web-based graduate course, specifically the online P540 course
which you will be a student in the summer semester (May 20 until
August 9, 2002)
INFORMATION
1. The following
activities are part of the normal curriculum of P540: communicating
via e-mail and within Oncourse; participating in online class discussions;
and completing course assignments. If you volunteer for this study,
the researcher will review these class activities as part of this study.
If you decline to participate, your email communications will not be
read and your course information will not be analyzed.
2. By replying
to this message, you agree to give permission for the researcher to
use your materials for research purposes only. The researcher
will replace your name with a pseudonym to protect your identity.
TIME REQUIRED:
No time is required of you beyond your normal participation in the course.
All of the students
and instructors in the online P540 course will be invited to participate
in this study (approximately 22 total.)
RISKS
There are no foreseeable
risks in participating in this study.
BENEFITS
The benefits to
you will be the opportunity to participate in research that will contribute
to a greater understanding of the interactions that take place in an
online learning environments which can lead to the more effective design
of online courses.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Names will not be
used in any report. Some postings may be cited or summarized,
but they will be anonymized. All data documents will be sanitized (stripped
of participant names and replaced with code names). The sanitized data
will be kept by the researcher forever for possible future analysis.

Your participation
in this study is voluntary; you may refuse to participate without penalty.
If you decide to participate, you may withdraw from the study at any
time without penalty and without loss of benefits to which you are otherwise
entitled. If you withdraw from the study before data collection
is completed your data will be returned to you or destroyed.
