Alain Barker, D.Mus., joined the IU Jacobs School of Music as director of marketing and publicity in 2004 and serves an organization with 25 academic departments and centers that produce more than 1,100 concerts each year, including a full opera and ballet season and a summer series. Since 2004, he has participated in major efforts to re-brand the school, redesign and redevelop multiple websites, develop marketing campaigns in strategically vital areas such as admissions, development, and alumni relations; and substantially increase social media activity in many areas of the school.
Barker has lived and worked in Africa, Europe, and North America and brings a deep appreciation of cultural diversity in the arts to his work. In addition to his activities as an administrator, he is a professional flutist with concerto, solo and orchestral experience. For four years, he was as a visiting lecturer during the Jacobs School’s Summer Semester. He is a partner in Aguavá New Music Studio (a music-production company) and ran an arts-management business that represented national and international artists. From 1994 to 2004, Barker was Executive Director of the Bloomington Early Music Festival, during which time it gained regional and national significance.
Barker has a long-standing commitment to the Bloomington community and has served with the Bloomington Arts Commission, Buskirk-Chumley Theater Board of Directors, WFIU Board of Advisors, the IU Arts Coordinating Council.
