- Director, News and Media, IU Communications, Bloomington Office
rpiurek[at]iu [dot] edu
Ryan heads the IU Bloomington news and media team, where he works with a collection of media relations specialists who write and disseminate press releases, articles, and other IU-related information. Ryan also helps coordinate media coverage for the university and supports the associate vice president for university communications.
Prior to assuming his current role, Ryan served as a member of IU’s presidential communications team and, before that, spent nearly five years promoting arts and entertainment news and events at IU. Before coming to IU in 2002, Ryan worked as a copywriter/editor for Bloomington-based Hirons & Company, as a media relations specialist for a sports PR/marketing agency in Connecticut, and as an intern in the speechwriting office of President Bill Clinton.
A Connecticut Yankee transplanted to Hoosier country, Ryan has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree from IU in journalism, though he’s probably most proud that his alma maters can claim eight national basketball championships between them!
When he’s not at work, Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Xander and Veronica. He also appreciates awaiting the next Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen album, reading about politics, following his favorite New York sports teams, running, watching TV and movies, and keeping up with the Kardashians, American Idol, Seinfeld, Saturday Night Live and all of his other pop-culture obsessions. He occasionally comments on these obsessions from his Twitter account, which has slightly fewer followers than several other Ryans, like Gosling and Reynolds.
