Second Essay -- Spring 2009

1)  Compose an essay on the role of the concept of “Kultur” in German culture in the first four decades of the 20th century.
                In your essay be sure to discuss the work and/or ideas of at least four individuals, who represent diverse reactions to this cultural ideal.  You should also organize your essay around a clear thesis concerning the role of “Kultur” in German culture in this period.

N.B. Many of the figures we have studied have not explicitly referred to the concept of “Kultur,” but have been influenced positively or negatively by it.  Anyone who was explicitly or implicitly working to further or to destroy the ideals enshrined in the concept of “Kultur” would be an appropriate subject for this essay.

2) Why were politics and culture so closely intertwined in Germany before, during, and after Weimar?
In your answer be sure to consider multiple factors that may have contributed to this close relationship between politics and culture and to support your thesis with specific references to particular individuals, works, movements, and events.
