How Will Your Grade Be Determined?

 Undergraduates

I. Three Papers – 20% of the Final Grade Each
At the end of each of the three sections of the course you will be presented with two questions arising from the material we have been studying in that section.  You will have ten days to compose a five-page paper in response to one of these questions, supporting your position with material drawn the readings, lectures, web materials, and class activities.

2. Weekly Web Assignments – 20 % of final grade
Each week an assignment will appear on the course web site.  These are designed to help structure your approach to the material, to give me feedback on what is and is not being understood, and to prove an incentive for you to keep up with the readings and the web materials.

You will get credit for submitting these assignments and a sample of them will be graded.  Should we have indications that a student is not taking this work seriously, we will go back over all of his or her assignments more carefully.

3. Group Work – 20% of the Final Grade
Numerous pedagogical studies indicate that students learn most effectively in teams, and the very nature of the material we are studying lends itself to active small group interaction much more readily than to the passive reception of information through lecture.  Therefore, you will be assigned to a five-person team with which you will work across the semester.  You will regularly share ideas with your team and work together to respond to in-class assignments that should deepen your understanding of the ideas we are studying and prepare you to produce more effective papers at the end of each section.

 Graduate Students

1. Three Papers – 25% of the Final Grade Each

Graduate students will write papers at the end of each section of the course in response to one of same questions as the undergraduates.  They will, however, be expected to meet a higher standard of evidence and argument.

2. Graduate Paper – 25% of the Final Grade

Graduate students will also compose a 10 page paper on some artist/intellectual, movement, or issue connected with the course.  This may be based upon a narrowly focused set of primary sources or upon a broader survey of the secondary literature on a particular topic.  Students should have meet with the instructor to discuss their topic no later than the end of the fifth week of the semester.

Late Work and Incompletes

In order to maintain fairness in grading, late work will be penalized one step (e.g. B- to C+) each class after the due date until it is reduced to an F.
 Incompletes will not be given.
Exceptions to these procedures will only be granted in cases of major illness supported by a note from a physician and only after consultation with the instructor.
