THE IMAGE BELOW IS A TWO HOUR SEGMENT THAT INCLUDES AN EARTHQUAKE EVENT
CAREFULLY STUDY THE "BOXED" AREA, IT INCLUDES MOST OF THE EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY.
THE NEXT IMAGE SHOWS THE "BOXED" AREA IN GREATER DETAIL

THE "BOXED" AREA BELOW DEPICTS THE SURFACE WAVES OF THE EARTHQUAKE
THE BODY WAVES, INCLUDING THE "P" AND "S" WAVES OCCUR PRIOR TO THE SURFACE WAVES.
THESE SURFACE WAVES ARE RAYLEIGH WAVES BECAUSE THIS IS A VERTICAL COMPONENT SEISMOGRAM.

OPEN SWAP AND THE SELECTED PEPP DATA SET AS INSTRUCTED BY YOUR TEACHER NOW.
THEN RETURN TO THIS TUTORIAL

THESE ARE THE RAYLEIGH WAVES REPRESENTED BY "SWAP"

FIND THE RAYLEIGH WAVES ON YOUR SEISMIC DATA NOW.
THEN RETURN TO THIS TUTORIAL

THE BOTTOM BOX SHOWS THE RAYLEIGH WAVES IN GREATER DETAIL.

IN THE NEXT IMAGE 20 SECOND PERIOD WAVES WILL BE SELECTED
TO HELP DETERMINE THE MAGNITUDE OF THESE WAVES.

USE YOUR "ZOOM" TOOL IN SWAP TO SELECT SMALL PORTIONS OF THE RAYLEIGH WAVES.
THEN RETURN TO THIS TUTORIAL

USE YOUR "CALIPER" TOOL TO FIND A RAYLEIGH WAVE WITH A 20 SECOND PERIOD.
THEN RETURN TO THIS TUTORIAL

THE "MEASURED VALUES" BOX CONTAINS INFORMATION ON AMPLITUDE IN
COUNTS AS WELL AS THE PERIOD OF THE SELECTED WAVE IN SECONDS.

IN THIS CASE THE MEASURED VALUES ARE:
PERIOD: 20.428 SEC.
AMPLITUDE IN COUNTS:  143902.44

THE COUNTS AND PERIOD ARE THEN INPUT INTO THE EXCEL PROGRAM TO FIND THE MAGNITUDE.
