Using Winquake
and PEPP data to pinpoint the
Darmstadt Earthquake Epicenter
Brett
Cauble: McCutcheon High School
2002
Objectives:
Materials:
Internet access
Winquake software
Procedure:
1. Go to WILBER at the Iris Education and Outreach [ http://www.iris.washington.edu/EandO/ ] website and select the Darmstadt event from Southern Indiana in the summer of 2002.
2. Download the data from at least 3 PEPP stations, more will probably work better.
3. Once you have received the data open up Winquake, and launch all of the files at the same time.
4. You will want to select the “Tables” top menu item. This will bring up a list of travel time tables to use for location. Select “Regional” for “Current Table:” or the exercise won’t work very well.
5. Next, use the cursor to mark where the P/S arrival times are for each of the PEPP station data that you have.
6. Once you have done all of your stations click on the View->Locate function in Winquake. This will show you where the epicenter is.
7. Print a copy of where your epicenter is, and look on a map of Indiana to see how close you were to the actual epicenter.
8. Go back to the Iris webpage, and choose another local event.
9. Manipulate the data in Winquake as before and locate the epicenter. Print a copy of where your epicenter is predicted to be.
10. Go back to the seismograms that you used in Winquake and use the predicted P/S arrival times, and then view the predicted epicenter. Print a copy and see how close you were to what was predicted.
Questions:
What might have accounted for the difference in what you chose versus what the computer has predicted as the epicenter ?
