Provost and Executive Vice President, IU Bloomington , Rudy Professor of Philosophy, Adjunct Professor of Gender Studies, American Studies, and Comparative Literature.

University of Minnesota, B.A. 1970; Harvard University, Ph.D. 1980.

Her principal research interests are in philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, ethics, aesthetics, and American philosophy. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association and as the Central Division Representative to the APA Board of Officers, and has served as APA delegate to the American Council of Learned Societies. She has also been an associate editor of Journal of Social Philosophy and a member of the editorial baord of American Philosophical Quarterly. She presently sits on the Board of the Dewey Foundation and on both the advisory and the editorial boards of the Peirce Edition Project. She has won numerous teaching awards.
