Financial AidFinancial Aid for Incoming StudentsThe Department does not admit students to its Ph.D. program without funding either from its own or from external resources. Students are assured of continued financial aid through the fifth year of their Ph.D. program (the fourth year for those entering with advance standing — normally an M.A. or equivalent degree in hand), provided they continue to make satisfactory progress toward the degree. Financial aid comes in two main forms: (a) Associate Instructorships (known elsewhere as Teaching Assistantships), and (b) fellowships. The Department nominates students as appropriate for fellowships available through the Cognitive Science Program; the number and amounts of these fellowships vary. In addition, the Department nominates outstanding continuing graduate students for fellowship awards available through other University resources or outside agencies. In recent years, the Department has been able to offer one fellowship annually to an incoming student, with funds provided by the College of Arts and Sciences. Such funds may also be used to supplement offers of Associate Instructorships for incoming students. Fellowships for incoming students normally run for a term of one academic year, with a commitment to continued support, typically as an Associate Instructor, through the student's fourth or fifth year (as described above). University Fellowships and Associate Instructorship packages come with full fee scholarships, which pay for tuition, health insurance, and all but "nonremittable" fees (see below). In addition, through funds provided by a generous endowment to the Philosophy Department from the late James B. Nelson, all students are awarded a special third-year Summer Fellowship of $1,500, plus an annual travel fellowship of $250 to help defray the costs of attending national or international professional conferences. The James B. Nelson Dissertation Year Fellowship is awarded by the Department annually on a competitive basis. Current Financial Aid Figures and Fees (2008–09) |
