Al Somers to enter IU Athletics Hall of Fame
Al Somers, one of IU's and Indiana Beta's distinguished Olympic swimmers from the 1960s, will be one of seven former athletes who will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 6, 2009, and will be recognized at the IU-Wisconsin football game the next day.

Bro. Somers won swimming letters in 1961, 1962, and 1963 and was captain in 1963... won five Big Ten championships in the 400, 1500 and 1650 freestyles... competed in 1960 Olympics in the 400 (5th) and 1500 freestyles (7th)... Won four AAU championships in freestyle events... owned American record in 400 freestyle for three years... originally from Indianapolis, he is currently a retired neurologist in Bloomington... awarded the Z.G. Clevenger in 2007.

Al also rode for Phi Psi on the 1963 and 64 Little 500 teams and was an All-Star rider in 1964.

He now competes in Masters swimming competitions.

The inductee class also includes Bob Knight, former basketball coach, and Jerry Yeagley, former soccer coach.

Other members of the Hall of Fame from Indiana Beta (and their initiation dates) are: Arthur "Cotton" Berndt, 1907; Gene (Pat) Gedman, '52; Ralph Hamilton, 1913; John Kinsella, '71; Fred Schmidt, '62; Mark Spitz, '69; Mike Stamm, '71; Ted Stickles, '61; and Mike Troy, '59.

Annual Golf Outing for Class of '65


The Annual Golf Outing for the Class of 1965 (and others nearby) was held near Las Vegas at the Primm Valley Resort March 25-29, 2009. Although the weather was a little chilly and windy, all had a great time recalling old memories from the Chapter and maintaining friendships that now exceed 40 years.

One of the great traditions of the trip is that one day they specifically remember Kevin Berry (1945-2006) from their class and present the Kevin Berry Trophy to winner of the day's golf. Kevin was an Aurtralian butterfly swimmer who won the Gold Medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He set twelve world records in his career. The Class of 1965 funds an annual scholarship for a foreign-born swimmer at IU in Kevin's memory. This year's winner of the Kevin Berry Trophy was Bill Bailey '65.

The following brothers attended to Golf Outing: Bill Bailey '65, Dick Beale '65, Todd Hodgdon '64, Thad Hodgdon '65, Kent Agness '69, Greg Mikkelsen '65, Alan Ogden '67, Jim Long 65, Bill Replogle '65, Stu Rhodes '69, Bob Robeson '67, Jim Schmidt '64, Willie Strycker '65 and Will McMahan '67.

Alumnus receives Clevenger Award
Brother John Wallace, '43, who was a member of the IU basketball team, was awarded the Zora Clevenger Award during the IU-Iowa game weekend.

Wallace set an IU scoring record during his college years.

The award is presented to living I-Men who, as alumni, have made outstanding contributions to Indiana University through service to its athletic program. The award is named for former IU coach and athletic director Zora G. Clevenger and is the highest award that the I-Men’s Association presents.

This is the second year in a row when an Indiana Betan has received the award. Last year's Phi Psi winner was Al Somers.

Alumni and Undergrads attend G.A.C.
in Indianapolis
A large delegation of Indiana Beta alumni and undergraduates participated in the national Fraternity's biennial Grand Arch Council in Indianapolis, July 30 through August 3.

Over 650 Fraternity members from throughout the country attended to conduct the Fraternity's business. Indiana Betans registered included Stu Rhodes, '69; Kent Agness, "69; Doug Harlan, '88; Bob Kort, '88; Kent Owen, '58, Fraternity Mystagogue; Mike McCoy, '58, Fraternity historian; John Buck, '75, Foundation director; Spencer Smith, '07, GP; and Nick Clark, '07. Additional Indiana Betans attended some of the events.

Events included a golf outing and a President's reception, Awards Luncheon and Foundation Donor's reception, a dinner for Indiana Beta alumni at St. Elmo's and a post-dinner hospitality event at the Canterbury Hotel, and the G.A.C. reception and banquet.

In addition, the Indiana Beta House Corporation met at the Columbia Club. The meeting included a report from the Long Range Planning Committee, co-chaired by Rick Johnson ’78 and Kent Agness ’69; and a report from the Building Committee, chaired by Bob Kort ’88.
