Phonetics/Computational Linguistics
Lab (MM401) Policy
Room Policies:
- The
lab is for people who are working on a phonetics or computational
linguistics project.
- If others
are working on projects, please practice common courtesy and limit talking
and phone calls.
- The
phone in the lab is for lab business.
- The
lab is available from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
- You
are not allowed to check out the lab key without permission from Damir
Cavar or Kenneth de Jong.
- No
food, drink, or tobacco is allowed near the computer desks. Keep your food
or drink on the table in a middle of the room.
- Leave
the air conditioner on in summer.
Computer and Equipments Policies:
- Lab
computers are for academic use.
- Chat
functions and game playing are restricted from all computers.
- Do NOT
leave any of your data on the machines. Always save data to a disk or your
CFS.
- Remember
to log out (but don’t turn off) the machine when you leave the room.
- Do NOT
plug or unplug any cables attached to the DAT and Amp.
- Turn
off the audio equipment when you leave the room.
- If you
want to install a program, contact the lab maintenance at phonlab @ indiana.edu.
- Checking
out lab equipments is possible with permission from Damir Cavar or Kenneth
de Jong.
Printer Policies:
- Printing
documents unrelated with a phonetics or computational linguistics projects
are not allowed.
- You
should not use the printers as duplicating machines. If you want multiple
copies of a document, print one copy and then use a photocopy machine to
make more copies.
- You
should not print manual pages on DAT, WaveSurfer, etc. Hard copies of
these manual pages are available on the bookshelf in the lab.
- When
you send a document to the printer, make sure you pick it up even if you
no longer want it.
- When
you run out of paper, go to the Linguistics Office (Memorial Hall 322) for
refill.
Computer Reservation:
- Signup
is necessary on the sheet located outside of the MM401.
Computer Names:
- Each
computer has a name. Macintoshes are food, and PCs are animals. They are
named in the English alphabetical order. A computer whose name begins with
initial letter A is the oldest one. For example, Armadillo is the
oldest PC in the lab.
Sign-up Policies:
- Sign-up
sheet will be posted on Fridays for the following two weeks.
- You
may sign up for a maximum block of time of 3 hours.
- You
may sign up for a maximum of 10 hours in a given week.
- You
forfeit your rights to the computer if you don not show up within 20
minutes of the time you have signed up for. .
