If you’re walking at Indiana University this summer, you might want to look up.

IU will be replacing roofs on several campus buildings, thanks in part to generous repair and rehabilitation funding included in the two-year budget approved by the state Legislature.

Work is taking place on roof replacement, tuckpointing and window repairs on Kirkwood Hall.

That work is part of a project that was funded several years ago to fix up buildings in the Old Crescent of campus, near Dunn Woods.

But the state R&R funding should let IU get moving on other scheduled roof replacements, including the Speech and Hearing Building, Woodburn Hall, Poplars and the IU Art Museum.

Terry Clapacs, IU vice president for administration, said the plan is to do as many of the projects as possible this summer.

“We’re trying to turn them out, get them bid and under way so we can finish before winter weather arrives,” he said.

The Legislature approved $49.5 million in repair and rehabilitation funds for the seven IU-administered campuses, including IU Bloomington.

The funding comes after a decade of little or no R&R money for colleges and universities.
