Apprenticeship ProgramGo to: ⇒ Craft Selection ⇒ Recruitment & Selection ⇒ WorkKeys Summary ⇒ Program Administration ⇒ Application Forms ⇒ Contact Information The Indiana University Apprenticeship Program (IUAP) was established in 1978 to develop qualified, skilled craftworkers for the IU Bloomington Physical Plant Department. IUAP offers participants the opportunity to advance their careers through full-time, four-year apprenticeships in the Physical Plant. At the end of four years, apprentices are promoted to the journey level in their respective craft and continue as permanent full-time employees of the university. Craft SelectionApprenticeships may be offered in the following crafts: brickmason, carpenter, electrician, elevator mechanic, heating mechanic, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, sheet metal mechanic, locksmith, and HVAC. It is important for prospective IUAP applicants to select a craft that they wish to master, one that matches their interests, skills and abilities. The earlier you choose a craft the better, because you can use your time wisely and improve your chances for being selected to IUAP. Once selected into IUAP, participants complete four years, on-the-job training and specialized instruction in their craft. Apprentices who achieve journey level status are among the highest-paid service maintenance employees in IU's Physical Plant. Recruitment & SelectionOpenings for the IUAP apprenticeship program are posted by the University Human Resources Office. Openings are announced in local newspapers and the IU employment bulletin. Interested individuals should contact the IUAP coordinator or use the forms on this web site to apply. There is a mandatory pre-apprenticeship meeting held for all interested individuals. Anyone who is 18 years of age and has a high school diploma or general equivalence diploma (GED) may apply; they need not be IU employees. Qualified applicants are required to take the WorkKeys Assessment. The assessments are administered by the WorkOne Office of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and is located on Landmark Drive in Bloomington. Other WorkOne sites located in the state can also administer the assessment. An individual can schedule the assessment individually by calling the WorkOne Office. The assessment results are required as part of the application. Results can be compared to the standard for the trade applied for to determine if qualified. The results will be used as part of the application process. Applicants will be interviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee. Each applicant's interview rating, related education, training, assessment results, and work experience are combined to determine the final selection for craft apprentices. Those individuals not selected will be placed on a waiting list for any future openings. WorkKeys SummaryThe following table is a summary of the WorkKeys Assessment Area and Results.
