General Information

The Utilities Division is responsible for all the utilities on campus. With electricity, steam, heating, air conditioning, water, sewage,  we serve total of over 15 million square feet of building space. We also provide careful documentation, metering, and locating services.

Special Note about Campus Lighting

The Utilities Division maintains the streetlamps on campus. If you notice an IU streetlamp is out, please report it to Jim Bayne at 856-4788 or by email at jbayne@indiana.edu. Thank you for your help in keeping IU safe.

Services

Utility Information Group

The Utilities Information Group (UIG) is the central clearinghouse for information about utilities on IU campuses. The UIG locates, maps and documents utilities and issues excavation permits for IU campuses. We also conduct meter readings, storm water management and water conservation efforts.

  • Locating
  • If you need a utility located, please contact Donald Goodwin, Crew Leader of the UIG. His office is on the 3rd floor of the Central Heating Plant. Most of the time he is out helping contractors and campus crews locate utilities before digging. You may contact him by:

  • Metering
  • Water Conservation

The water conservation project in the UIG focuses on educating people at IU about the Leak Line number, 855-3740, which can be called to report a leak, and on monitoring water use on campus.

  • Documentation
  • Utility Data Display

This summer the Utilities Information Group and the Sustainability Task Force are working together to create a real-time display of meter readings for the various utilities and meters on campus.

For information on the Sustainability Task force, go to the website: https://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/

    Storm Water Management

IU received permits to manage storm water in April 2005. Storm water is now monitored and managed on IU campuses. Storm water management in the UIG consists of locating and replacing old frames, filters and catch basins in campus drains.

Steam Heating

  • Production of steam at the Central Heating Plant. Operate and maintain 6 boilers for campus heat, humidification, and hot water.
  • Distribution of steam to over 10 million square feet of space.
