General Information
The Utilities Division is responsible for all the utilities on campus. With electricity, steam, heating, air conditioning, water, sewage, we serve total of over 15 million square feet of building space. We also provide careful documentation, metering, and locating services.
Special Note about Campus Lighting
The Utilities Division maintains the streetlamps on campus. If you notice an IU streetlamp is out, please report it to Jim Bayne at 856-4788 or by email at jbayne@indiana.edu. Thank you for your help in keeping IU safe.

If you need a utilities locate, please contact Donald Goodwin,
Crew Leader of the UIG. His office is on the 3rd floor of the Central Heating Plant. Most of the time he is out helping contractors and campus crews locate utilities before digging. You may contact him by:
Steam Heating
- Production of steam at the Central Heating Plant. Operate and maintain 6 boilers for campus heat, humidification, and hot water.
- Distribution of steam to over 10 million square feet of space.

Chilled Water
- Manage primary/secondary pumping and contract maintenance.
- Production of chilled water at plant, using 8 electric centrifugal chillers.
- Distribution of 15,500 tons of chilled water annually for air conditioning.

Electrical Systems
- Campus Lighting maintenance and distribution. Special Note: If you notice an IU streetlamp is out, please report it to Jim Bayne at 856-4788 or by email at jbayne@indiana.edu.
- Distribution of electrical, including high voltage electrical, to campus.
Natural Gas
- Maintain natural gas piping.
