Pi Phi Firsts

History of Philanthropy

  • ARROWMONT is an educational facility established and supported by Pi Phis.
  • SETTLEMENT SCHOOL - the actual settlement school for the mountain people of the Appalachian region. The school was erected in Gatlinburg, Tennessee because it was one of the areas chosen by the U.S. Bureau of Education as in most need of schools. It was opened March 12, 1912.
  • ARROWCRAFT-opened in 1926, as an outgrowth of the native crafts taught and preserved by the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School. Arrowcraft refers not only to the shop but also to the hand-crafted items made by the people of the Appalachain region.
  • ARROWMONT-is the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, the educational facility owned and operated by Pi Beta Phi. Articles made by craft students are one-of-a-kind and are not distributed or sold through the Arrowcraft Shop
