President McRobbie leads applause for Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the May 2008 commencement. Shirleaf is the first woman elected president of Liberia or any other country in Africa. She received an honorary degree in recognition of her efforts to promote peace, justice, and democracy. The honor also reflects the close relationship between Liberia and the university.
