President McRobbie announces the Lilly Endowment’s gifts, totaling $69 million, for the music and law schools. The gifts will provide IU’s world-class music faculty and students with a state-of-the-art studio facility and propel the School of Law—Bloomington to even higher levels of excellence among public university law schools.

Lauren Robel, dean of the IU School of LawBloomington and the Van Nolan Professor of Law, says the $25 million gift will transform the law school into one of the top public university law schools in the country. Gwyn Richards, dean of the Jacobs School of Music, says the $44 million gift will secure the schools international preeminence.
Sara B. Cobb, the Lilly Endowments vice president for education, announces the gifts that will help secure the international standing of the Jacobs School of Music and establish the School of LawBloomington as one of the best public university law schools in the country. Soprano and Senior Lecturer at the Jacobs School of Music Sylvia McNair performs a rendition of Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter classics at the announcement of the Lilly Endowment gift.
The Indiana University Brass Choir and members of the Jacobs School of Musics brass department performed Celebration Fanfare by James Clemens. The ensemble was conducted by Professor of Music Edmund Cord. Jacobs School faculty members Sylvia McNair, soprano, and Luke Gillespie, pianist, perform their versions of Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter songs.
The IU community gathers in the Musical Arts Center (MAC) to hear the announcement. The MAC is currently decorated for The Nutcracker performances. David Jacobs Jr., the son of David and Barbara Jacobs, the namesakes of the Jacobs School of Music, poses with Jacobs faculty member and soprano Sylvia McNair and Dean Gwyn Richards after the announcement.
