A Season of Renewal at IU

Radio Commentary of

Seasons get mixed up on college campuses. In the spring, we harvest our crop of graduates and send them out into the world. In the fall, as students return to campus—or enter IU for the first time—we see the clear signs of rebirth and renewal that herald the busy growing season to come.

Many types of students come to IU each fall—undergraduate and graduate; in state, out of state, and international; those of traditional college age and those who decide to pursue new educational goals later in life. This year, IU Bloomington is welcoming one of the largest, most multicultural, and most academically distinguished freshman classes in its history. IU Kokomo is welcoming the largest traditional-aged freshman class in its history.

High Expectations

Last week during move-in day on the Bloomington campus, as I greeted our new freshmen and their families, I was reminded once again of the enthusiastic expectations our new students bring with them when they come to IU. I was also reminded how hard we all work to meet those expectations.

Students come to study with our excellent faculty. They come because IU has outstanding student support programs to help them succeed, because of our unparalleled leadership in information technology, our strong emphasis on the arts, and our world-renowned professional programs.

A World-Class University with a Small-Town Feel

I met parents moving their fourth IU freshman into his dorm room. His older sisters and brothers have already graduated from IU, as did his father. Their youngest son will be coming to campus next year.

I met another family from Illinois whose son came to IU because everyone they talked to throughout the admissions process was so very helpful. They appreciated the Hoosier hospitality that is evident on every campus of this world-class university.

To our faculty and staff, I send a resounding thank you for all you do to make IU the remarkable place that it is. To all of our students—new and returning—I send one important message. This is your university. Give it your best and draw the best out of it. And have an exciting and productive year!
