Annual vs. Periodical Cicadas

Periodical cicadas are a special kind of cicada. They have very long life spans -- either 13 or 17 years -- and they all come out synchronously (at the same time).

There are 4 species of 13-year periodical cicadas and three species of 17-year Cicadas (shown to left; photo from University of Michigan). They are found only in the United States.
