Chestnut Oak, Rock Oak Scientific Name: Quercus prinus Description: A large tree 40-50' and often 100' high, with a trunk diameter of 4-6'. The trunk generally very tall and straight, the bark firm, light brown gray or blackish, coarsely and deeply furrowed with long perpendicular fissures, but on very young trees smooth, or the fissures far apart; the grayish branches smooth, rather slender, and spreading. Habitat: Found on dry hillsides and in rocky woods. Range: Southern Maine, to Tennessee and Georgia. Type: Tree Source:Field Book of American Trees and Shrubs by F.
