Annual vs. Periodical Cicadas

Periodical cicadas are a special kind of cicada. They have very long life spans – either 13 or 17 years – and they all come out synchronously at the same time.

There are 4 species of 13-year periodical cicadas and three species of 17-year Cicadas (shown below). They are found only in the United States.
