Answers

Q. Where are the photocopiers?
A. There is a photocopier available for general use in the main office behind the soundproof divider. It  requires a copy code, which are tied to an accounts.  I fyou do not have a grant account from your advisor, you can arrange for a debit account with Lana Fish in the main office.

You may put additional money on your IU ID cards for photocopying at the main library, at the Indiana Memorial Union, or at vending machines at various locations (mainly at the libraries).

The 2nd floor copier is for use by folks who have account numbers. Your advisor or instructor may be able to give you an account number for use on specific projects. You can also get cards that charges copies to particular grants or accounts.

Also, the copier in the Psychology office has several time-saving features. You can photocopy two facing pages from a book in a single pass by pressing the key marked "Two Page Separation." It can also staple and collate for you. You can make transparencies by feeding them into the fold-out manual feed tray on the right-hand side. If you have questions or problems, speak with Marlene (Secretary/Copier Specialist) in the main office.

There are also copy machines in the Geology library next door (10th floor) and Business/SPEA library next door that take ID cards if you run out of money on an old copy card.

Q. Where is the library in the Psychology building?
A. There is a cooperative library, CAUSE, which is in an unmarked room on the third floor (right between the photocopier and the women's restroom.  To get a key, give a $3 deposit to the Psychology secretary in the main office. The periodicals have been donated by faculty and students. Out of consideration for other CAUSE users, be sure to make copies of articles you need and promptly return periodicals to be reshelved.

Q. How do I access the PsychINFO or the library catalog on-line?
A. Go to http://www.indiana.edu/~libweb/index.html for complete information about the library. To access PsychINFO directly, Telnet to infogate, and enter your SSN as your ID. Alternatively, use the web interface at http://erlsvr1.lib.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/psyc.cgi.

Also note that you can log onto PsychInfo and IUCAT from the Psych Building or home using Infogate. This is also incredibly handyyou can do a quick lit search between classes.

Q. What do I do if no IU Bloomington library carries a journal I need?
A. There are interlibrary loans for journal articles that cannot be found on the Bloomington campus. They can send it to you at the Psychology building if you specify that on the form, otherwise they e-mail you to let you know your articles can be picked up. The service is free. Request loans at the main library, or online, http://www.indiana.edu/~libweb/index.html

You can also request loans of books or articles via emailthe home page has a section under "libraries". You need your student ID and the barcode number from your ID. This is such a great servicethey even deliver the books to your campus address (i.e., main office mailboxes). Sometimes articles get delivered too, but I think that might be a mistake or a particularly generous staffperson, not policy.

Q. Where are the readings for my classes placed?
A. Readings (papers, chapters, etc.) that are to be photocopied for your classes are located on the second floor on shelves in the hallway by room 222. In consideration of others, return originals promptly after making your copies.

Clinical classes have articles placed in the clinic workroom.

Q. Where is Hillcrest, and who's there?
A. Hillcrest Psychology Research Center is located 6 blocks east of the Psychology Building on the corner of Indiana Ave and Cottage Grove. Half of the building is residential apartments, the other half is psychology labs and offices. Professors who have labs here include Esther Thelen, Linda Smith, Susan Jones, Kelly Mix (all Developmental), Alexandra Quittner (Clinical), Jerry Chertkoff, and Ed Hirt (Social). There is a small parking lot across the street with A, C, and D3 spots. The A spots are faculty, the C are for graduate students (this is handy for when the psych building parking lot is full, although those who work in Hillcrest prefer that you find parking elsewhere), and the D3 spots are for residents, although security has admitted that they will not ticket C stickered cars in D3 spots because there aren't enough parking spots for us.

Q. Where do I get maps of campus and of Bloomington?
A. Maps of Bloomington are available at the Bloomington Visitors Center, 2855 N Walnut, 334- 8900 and at any bike store. Campus maps are available from the Indiana Memorial Union, and on-line at http://www.cica.indiana.edu/news/ campus/index.html

Q. Where do I get an IU photo ID? How do I get an ID if I am here the summer before I am officially enrolled?
A. IU Photo ID cards are prepared by Campus Card Services, 501 N Union in the Ashton Center, 855-8711. If you are here the summer before you are registered, you are probably being paid hourly from a grant or have some other appointment. Bring a letter from the departmental secretary stating your position and that you will be registering for the fall term to the Campus Card Services office.

Q. Where do I get a computer account?
A. To obtain a Network ID take your IU photo ID to the UCS Support Center, located in the Indiana Memorial Union, Room M084. It is open Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm. You will be asked to give your account a password. You must include a minimum of 2 non- alphabetical characters. When creating your password, use 8 characters if you plan on using Macintoshes at any time. For computing questions, see the UCS Knowledge Base at http://kb.indiana.edu/

Q. Where is the graduate student computer cluster?
A. There is a computer cluster for use by graduate students in Room 281. It has Windows NT machines, Macs, and a postscript HP laser printer. Software available includes SPSS, Mathematical, Word, Excel and more. To get a key, give a $3 deposit to the Psychology secretary in the main office.

Q. What are some good on-line resources?

Q. How do I get X's telephone number/e-mail address?
A. The department secretary prepares a new list each year with the contact numbers and addresses (home, office, lab) for every faculty and graduate student in Psychology. It comes out during the first month of classes. If you are here the summer before school starts, make a copy from your advisor or any graduate student. The department also prepares a TSG (Technical Support Group) contact card. This comes out at the end of August. You can also get telephone numbers and e-mail addresses on-line at http://iuaccts.ucs.indiana.edu/open-bin/addrbook/qname_form. Note that 5-XXXX means 855-XXXX off campus.

Q. Where is the student lounge?
A. There is currently no student lounge.

Q. How do I find out about insurance and health services?
A. For tons of information on health services, see the Graduate Student Organization (GSO) page at http://www.indiana.edu/~gsowww /Health/health.html

Lana Fish (855-1695) in the Psychology main office can also help.

In our experience with the health services here, walk-in clinic and all prescriptions are paid for by the insurance. You just need to submit your bill to
MEGA LIFE
Student Insurance Division
PO Box 809025
Dallas, TX 75380
In the past they even paid for immunization shots and medicine when a graduate student went out of the country ($90-value). It really doesn't hurt to send them your bills even if you think it's not coveredyou might get lucky!

Look for coupon books (at the bookstore, etc) at the start of the semesterfree dental exams, etc. It's a good way to get to know a dentist and check him/her out for free.

Q. What keys should I have?
A. It's helpful to have keys to the building, graduate computer cluster, and the CAUSE library. They each require a $3 deposit, and may be obtained from the Psychology secretary in the main office. If you need a Hillcrest key, see Lana Fish in the main office.

Q. Other than classes, what do I have to do for the first year?
A. You must complete a first-year project which is signed by your research advisor and the Graduate Student advisor, Dr. Meredith West. Also, you must put together an advisory committee of four faculty members. If you are in a special program, such as the dual Cognitive Science/Cognitive Science program, there are special restriction on the composition of the committee. Coralee Sons will be able to answer questions on the general requirements. [SEE GRADUATE STUDENT BULLETIN]

Q. How do I register for classes?
A. First, speak with your advisor and advisory committee about which classes you should take. A registration booklet will be mailed to your permanent address. For registering, you have several options: 1) go to Franklin hall during your appointment to register on-line. While it looks likes registration may be moving to campus-wide on-line availability, you currently must use the terminals in Franklin hall during your registration time. 2) Pay $17 and register by phone.

Q. What summer funding is available?
A. Many appointments in Psychology are now for a full year. If you have an assistantship, this means you may be called to TA (Teaching Assistant) a class over the summer. If you are in a interdisciplinary program (such as Cognitive Science), summer fellowships may also be available. See your program coordinator. Also, if you have TA position, you can also get extra money over the summer by working hourly as a consultant. You cannot, however, take two salaried positions from the university or faculty.

Q. How can I dial long distance from department?
A. You will need an access number from your advisor. Dial 9-1# and then the access code. For personal calls, you may dial 9 and then you long distance carrier number. For AT&T, dial 9-1- 800-CALL-ATT.

Q. Where do I go for health problems? (Like you really want them)
A. The Health Center at 700 N Jordan Ave (Corner of Jordan & 10th, 2 blocks east of the Psychology department) is opened during business hours, 8:00am to 4:30pm. There is a pharmacy in the Center. See their web site at http://www.indiana.edu:80/~health/. They can be reached at 855-4011, or health@indiana.edu. They also offer stress management services and counseling. Call 855-5711.

Q. Where is a fridge I can use?
A. There is a fridge on the 2nd floor, near room 222. There is no microwave for general use, but some labs have microwaves and are willing to share.

The clinic has a common fridge, hotplates, and microwave (aren't you jealous??)

Q. How do I run paid subjects/pooled subjects?
A. At IU, students taking introductory Psychology classes are required to participate in experiments or write papers on research. Most opt to participate in research. Students receive 1 credit for each hour they participate. The psychology secretary in the main office coordinates the awarding of credit, and handles the necessary forms. Procedures are detailed in a form available in the main office. Follow the guidelines carefully and you should have no problem. Speak with your advisor, and ask the secretary if you have additional question. Some experiments that require extended or exceptional participation pay subjects. Speak with your advisor about the procedures for your lab.

Note that the subject pool is often plentiful in the fall, but sparse in the spring, and non-existant or expensive (paid subjects) in the summer. Finishing PhDs, first-year projects, etc. get priority for the summer pool. Messageget started early on your first-year project early, so you don't get stuck trying to fight for subjects late in the year.

Q. Where do I park?
A. There is a C decal parking lot and a parking garage near the Psychology building. The lot fills up before 9:00am, as does the parking lot. Parking for cars with any IU parking decals are allowed in the garage after 5:00pm. Note that you must have some IU decal to do this. After 10:00p (earlier in the summer), the attendant leaves, and parking for everyone is free. For parking information, see http://www.indiana.edu/~parking/. At the beginning of every semester you must go to Franklin to renew your parking passes. Before you go though, you must get a letter from Lana Fish (Psychology main office).

There is a fifteen- minute parking space in front of the building, off 10th street. Be carefull how long you leave your car. Ticketing is vigorous and frequent.

Q. What buses run nearby? Where can I get a bus schedule?
A. There is a bus stop directly in front of the Psychology building. Bus 1, Fee Lane/BHS North, stops here from 7:15a-9:15p. Bus 6, Campus Shuttle, stops here from 7:15a- 11:00p. For complete schedule and route information, see http://www.bloomingtontransit.com, or call 336-RIDE (7433). There is also a campus bus schedule on the board near the double doors of the main office.

Q. Where do I get information on handicap services on campus?
A. The Psychology building has recently had some alterations to make navigation for folks in wheelchairs much easier. For parking information, see http://www.indiana.edu/~parking/disable 1.html. For general accessibility and other information, see the Center for Disability Information & Referral site at http://www.isdd.indiana.edu/~cedir/. For an interesting national organization based locally, see http://www.indiana.edu/~nca/aboutnca.html

Q. Where do I go for lunch?
A. For quick food places (walking distance from the Psychology building) you can go to Lennie's, east on 10th street 6 blocks; Yogi's, west on 10th street 6 blocks; and the library basement, east on 10th street 3 blocks; the awesome coffee and hip atmosphere of the art museum cafe, just minutes from the psychology building. This is a great place to relax during the day. They have little "food things" like scones and muffins. The Laughing Planet is a bike ride away on Kirkwood, but has great cheap burritos. Kirkwood has other fun places to eat as well.

Q. Why does the main library building look like that?
A. The structure was left behind by the Borg in a failed invasion attempt. We simply turned it into a library.

Q. Where do I get textbooks?
A. Three bookstores carry texts for classes at IUBAristotle's, TIS, and the Indiana Memorial Union. Each orders a portion of the texts needed for the expected size of a class. If one bookstore is sold out, try one of the others. Aristotle's and TIS are located between the Music School and Forest Quad, across East Third Street near the intersection of Jordan Avenue. The Indiana Memorial Union is located at Woodlawn Avenue and Seventh Street, near the HPER Building and Ballantine Hall. Textbooks are located on the mezzanine floor. See the IU web site at http://www.indiana.edu/iub/academic/ classes.html for more information. Get books early if you can. Then you can get the much cheaper used books.

Q. Where do I get information on Gay/Lesbian/Bi organizations?
A. See the GLB Support Services page at http://www.indiana.edu/~glbserv/. The department is a comfortable and accepting place for gay, lesbian and bi students. You'll find other GLB students here who are supportive and helpful. If you'd like to get in touch with other GLB students, contact Jesse Spencer-Smith at jbspence @indiana.edu. The GLB switchboard of Bloomington is 812-334-2180.

Also, there is a national mailing list, QUEERPSYCH. QUEERPSYCH is an unmoderated discussion list for lesbian, bisexual, gay,  and transgender psychology professionals, academics and students. This list was created in order to provide an arena for support and the discussion of issues pertinent to queer individuals working within the field of psychology.

To subscribe to QUEERPSYCH, send an email to:
LISTSERV@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM  and in the BODY of the message type:

SUBscribe QUEERPSYCH yourfirstname yourlastname

For example:  SUBscribe QUEERPSYCH Jane Doe

Q. Where do I get information on Foriegn Student Organizations?
A. See the International and National Student and Community Groups page at http://www.indiana.edu/~intlcent/res ources/groups/

Q. Where do I get information on minority organizations
A. See the FOCUS page at http://www.indiana.edu/~popfocus/

Q. Where do I go for campus computing infomation?
A. The student staff at UCS in the Union are incredibly helpful  a good source to go to for any computing questions or problems. They also know what is possible and what isn't as far as the computing services here on campus. For example, a first-year student once deleted all of her mail folders (eeekk!!)  for a fee of $15.00 they can arrange to restore the lost files.
