Answers

Q. Where can I get Scantron exam sheets scored? How do I get them RIGHT NOW?
A. You may drop off your exam sheets in the main office for scoring.  Fill out the cover sheet in the main office. The scantrons are regularly taken to Franklin Hall to be graded. Turnaround is several days. Ask Coralee Sons (csons@indiana.edu) about the "Grader" program.  For immediate scoring, you may take your scantrons directly to BEST (Bureau of Evaluative and Studies and Testing) at Franklin Hall, Room M002, to have them scored. Exams are top priority, and are done on a first-come first served basis. The turn around by the grader is usually one day, even if you pick them up. If you are not in a rush, you can drop off your scantrons in the Psychology main office. When they are completed they will be returned to you. You can also have your grades returned to you by e-mail (put your e-mail address on the cover sheet), which will make it easier to import into a spreadsheet.  BEST scanning services can be reached at 855-3357, or best@indiana.edu. They are very friendly and helpful.

You should post your grades in the hallway across from room 101 under the name of your instructor.

Q. How can I post grades on the Web?
A. BEST (Bureau of Evaluative and Studies and Testing) has several services available for secure posting of grades on the web (POSTEM), and for web-based quizzes (QUIZSITE). See their site at http://www.best.indiana.edu/ for more information. These services are easy to use, and can be accessed from any web-capable machine. This means you can create and post quizzes and grades from home. Very sweet. These are the same folks who provide scanning services.

Q. How am I assigned to TA class?
A. A committee meets to match your abilities and background with the needs of instructors. The terms of an assistantship state that you will have an average of 20 hours work in a week. Responsibilities vary greatly between assignments, but in general a Psychology assistantship is quite reasonable compared to other departments. A little-known fact about assistantships is that if you talk to the instructor of the course you are interested in TA-ing, they can request you and you probably will get that assignment. Further, you can let Coralee know what you are interested in and she will try to the best of her ability to help you get that assignment.

Q. How do I make copies of exams/handouts/etc. for large classes?
A. Your instructor should have a instructional copy code on which to charge copies. In the Psychology main office is a high-speed Risograph (modern-day equivalent to the Mimeograph) for making large numbers of copies (>50). It scans your one or two page original and produces high-quality single or double-sided copies very quickly. You use the same copier code on the regular copier, behind the partitionIf you have questions using this machine or the photocopier, speak with Marlene, Secretary/Copier Specialist.

Q. What teaching resources are there?
A. Videos for entertainment as well as for educational purposes can be found in the main office where Vicki's office is (Psychology main office). There is also a video catalog from which films can be picked out and requested from Franklin Hall. If the film is for a class, the rental fee is canceled (it's free). Also if you reserve the film enough ahead of time they will just send it through campus mail and you never have to go to Franklin Hall.

Q. What's the best way to keep track of grades?
A. There are several ways to keep track of grading for classes. Sometimes the professor in the class has a suggestion for which grading program to use. There is MacGrade, Excel, as well as quite a few others. The best way to find out is to ask other grad students.  Also, click here for a handout used in the Technical Training Seminar for First-Year TA's.

Q. How do I reserve a room, or a computer room?
A. This depends on which classroom. Vicki Black in the main office controls some of the rooms, and the Registrar controls the others. You can check with Vicki to see if the room you are interested in is under her control. To reserve a UCS cluster computer room, see the UCS reservation site at http://www.indiana.edu/~ucspcf/resources/siteres.html. To reserve the graduate student cluster in room 281, contact Vicki.

Q. How do I set up a mailing list for my class?
Would you want to use it for send-only (you or the instructor can send messages to the entire class)?  If so, set up a distribution list locally in Pine (or a mail client such as Eudora or Netscape if you use one of those).  In Pine, go to Address, create list.  In Netscape, go to the address book and create a group.

Would you like the distribution list to be for everyone's use (anyone in the class can send a message to everyone in the class)?  If so, click here for a handout used in the Technical Training Seminar for First-Year TA's. If you are using Iago, you work will be a bit harder.  Import the class list into Excel as outlined in the handout.  When you get it into Excel, cut and paste it into this spreadsheet.
