After its launch in 1937, one of the first missions of the Bibb was to protect threatened Atlantic merchants from the agressive tensions of the war in Europe. In 1942, the Bibb was outfitted with improved guns and enlisted into the service of the Navy for convoy escort duty. During her career, the Bibb rescued survivors from the S.S. Penmar and Henry S. Mallory, as well as being involved in the Vietnam conflict. Finally, she was decommissioned in 1985 prior to being sunk as an artificial reef.
