National Register of Historic Places Nomination

Acknowledgements

The completion of this paper represents the combined efforts of many people, agencies and institutions over several years. Each of these individuals and organizations share the goal of conserving and protecting fragile and irreplaceable submerged cultu ral and natural resources. Foremost is Charles D. Beeker, director of the Underwater Science and Educational Resource Program at Indiana University. Mr. Beeker originally suggested that nomination of U.S.C.G.C. Duane would be a worthy and challenging proj ect. He also arranged two dives on the vessel during the 1998 spring Florida Keys project in order that this work be completed by someone who had seen the vessel and experienced the sense of awe and reverence evoked by the site. He also made all files and information in U.S.E.R. available for use in this project. Rob Richardson aided greatly by helping locate information and materials in the U.S.E.R. office and lab areas and answering many questions on diving and any number of items. Paul Caputo of Quiesc ence dive shop in Key Largo, Florida provided firsthand information on the acquisition, preparation and placement of Duane by the Keys Area Dive Operators (K.A.D.O.). P.A.D.I. provided funding for the nomination and the photographic materials used to supp ort it. Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard Adm. J.M. Loy for endorsing the project, Hank Rogers of the Spencer Survivors Association for his encouragement and for passing the word to other Treasury class survivors that this project was being undertaken. T he many students who had gathered materials on Duane in previous years and provided a foundation for this project. The National Archives and U.S. Coast Guard Historians office for supplying photographs. Those most deserving of thanks are those who sailed the Treasury class vessels. It is only by their bravery, sacrifice and determination that the opportunity and freedom to do this work exists. A special note of remembrance to those who sailed these ships and gave their lives to insure our freedom today.
