Artifact Inventory



  • Design:The hatchet has a knob on one end and gradually increases in diameter tapering off to a rounded point. There is a hole bored though the center of the piece on the largest end. This hole is bigger on one side than the other suggesting that during it's use, a cobble was placed within to complete the hatchet.

  • Size:Length 48.3cm, Greatest Width 5.1cm, Smallest Width 2.54cm

  • Condition:Good. A bit dry and light, but sturdy.

  • Color:Brown with areas of yellow and dark brown. Wood grain apparent but not yet indentifiable.

  • C-14 Date: cal AD 1025 to 1275

  • Collection Date:Prior to August 1996

  • Comments:The hatchet exhibits lighter colored areas encircling the area around the hole. These areas are somewhat depressed and may be examples of worn rope depressions.
