WFIU 103.7 fm has been broadcasting from the Bloomington campus of Indiana University since October, 1950. The station is a charter member of the National Public Radio network, and along with 90 other stations, it carried the premiere broadcast of NPR’s in-depth news program, All Things Considered, on May 3, 1971. WFIU now broadcasts 24 hours a day.
Licensed to the Trustees of Indiana University, WFIU is funded by several sources: Indiana University; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; program underwriting grants from community businesses and organizations; and voluntary contributions from listeners. The station broadcasts at 34 kilowatts to 20 counties throughout south-central Indiana via 103.7 fm in Bloomington, 95.1 fm in Terre Haute, 100.7 fm in Columbus, and 106.1 fm in Kokomo. WFIU provides its listeners with continuous broadcast services, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each November, WFIU launches a membership/fund drive to raise revenues to offset operating expenses. Listeners, however, can become station members at any time throughout the year.
WFIU is an active member of the public radio community. Station news and feature productions have appeared on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and the radio services of the Associated Press and Network Indiana. Features such as Harmonia and the modular mini-program A Moment of Science are produced at WFIU and distributed nationwide via satellite.
WFIU has approximately 25 part-time student employees. WFIU’s programming centers on classical music, national and international news. Other formats include folk music, jazz, & comedy, and news & public affairs programming. The station’s programming comes from local sources, as well as national distributors such as the National Public Radio and Public Radio International networks. WFIU publishes a monthly program guide, Directions in Sound, which is distributed to contributing listeners.
